Explore Chipping near Buntingford

Chipping is part of the Buckland Parish just north of Buntingford. Located at a crossing of the River Rib and the major Roman road Ermine Street, the area was vital for traffic between London and York.

Why not treat yourself to breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea at the friendly family run Countryman Tea Rooms?

Originally a 17th Century coaching house, the Countryman was a pub for several centuries until it reopened as a tea room in 2024.

The Countryman Tea Rooms are open on Saturdays and Sundays 9-5pm. They have a comprehensive menu with plenty of gluten free options, and dogs are welcome in the cosy outdoor chalets.

And if you’d like to work up an appetite with a walk, we have both a longer and a shorter option for you to enjoy.

If you’re feeling energetic, the Buntingford North Loop is lovely walk in the north-east of the county affording expansive views across rolling countryside. The walk starts in Buntingford then heads west via Throcking then east via Chipping before passing through Wyddial then returning to Buntingford.

The Countryman Tea Rooms are approximately half way round the circuit.

7.4 miles/11.9km

If you prefer a shorter walk, turn right out of the Countryman Tea Rooms, cross the bridge and turn immediately right onto the bridleway shown in the sign. There is a network of walks with lovely expansive views.  Walk to Capon Wood or further to Wyddial before returning for a well-deserved treat.
